By Webhorse Studio Editorial Team

What SEO costs in India in 2026: monthly retainers by provider and type, one-time audit fees, GST, timelines and red flags to avoid.

Cover image for SEO Cost in India (2026): Monthly Packages Explained

SEO cost in India is usually ₹10,000 to ₹2,00,000 a month for legitimate work, with most small and mid-sized businesses paying between ₹15,000 and ₹60,000. Freelancers start lower, at ₹3,000 to ₹25,000 a month, while enterprise and large ecommerce programmes run from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh or more. Add 18% GST to any agency quote, and plan for at least 6 to 12 months before judging results.

Those ranges are wide because "SEO" covers everything from a few directory submissions to a full team doing technical fixes, content and outreach. This guide breaks the price down by provider, by type of SEO and by one-time work like audits, shows where published price guides disagree, and lists what you should never pay for.

SEO cost in India at a glance

We compared three recent Indian pricing guides from agencies that publish their numbers. They agree on the shape of the market but not on the exact bands, so the table shows all three side by side.

₹1,50,000 to ₹5,00,000+/month

₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh+/month

Sources: Nico Digital, Marko & Brando, SmartPixel. All are agencies, so treat their numbers as market ranges, not a rate card.

The biggest gap is at the bottom. SmartPixel puts marketplace freelancers at ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 a month, while Marko & Brando starts freelancers at ₹10,000. In practice both exist: the cheaper end is usually template packages run across dozens of clients, and the upper end is an experienced independent consultant.

What you get at each price level

Price matters less than deliverables. Here is what each band typically buys, based on the deliverables SmartPixel lists for each tier.

Under ₹10,000 a month

Expect basic Google Business Profile optimisation, a handful of directory submissions, an occasional short blog post and a monthly ranking report. This can work for a hyperlocal single-service business that only needs to appear in the map results. It rarely moves anything for a business competing beyond its neighbourhood.

₹15,000 to ₹35,000 a month

This is the realistic entry point for a small business that wants SEO to bring in leads. A fair package here includes on-page work on your main service pages, one or two researched blog posts a month, a basic technical audit with fixes, a managed Google Business Profile and a monthly report that uses Search Console data, not just a ranking screenshot.

₹40,000 to ₹1,00,000 a month

At this level you should get a team rather than one shared executive: a strategist, a writer, someone technical and someone doing outreach. Deliverables usually include several long articles a month, schema and Core Web Vitals work, earned backlinks from relevant sites and regular review calls. This suits competitive sectors such as real estate, education, hospitality and ecommerce, or businesses targeting several cities.

₹1 lakh a month and above

Enterprise SEO is mostly engineering and content operations: sitemaps for very large sites, faceted navigation, international targeting with hreflang, and a content programme with many writers. Most SMBs do not need it.

SEO packages in India: what a monthly plan actually includes

Many Indian agencies sell SEO as fixed packages priced by the number of keywords and pages they will work on. One published example from Anirup Technologies shows how this usually looks:

Plan

Price per month

Keywords

Pages optimised

Startup

₹10,000

10

6

Basic

₹15,000

20

10 to 12

Standard

₹25,000

30

20

Advanced

₹40,000

50

30 to 35

All four plans carry a 3-month minimum, and the agency notes that new website content can cost extra. That second point is common across the industry and catches many buyers out. Before you compare packages, ask each agency three things: how many new pages or articles are included each month, who writes them, and whether link building is included or billed separately.

Keyword counts are a weak way to compare plans. Ten well-chosen keywords with buying intent can bring more enquiries than fifty loosely related ones. Ask which keywords they would target and why.

Cost by type of SEO: local, national and ecommerce

What you are trying to rank for changes the price more than who you hire. These are the published monthly ranges by business type:

Enterprise

Above ₹1,50,000

National SEO costs more than local because you compete with every business in the country for the same terms. A dental clinic targeting "dentist near me" in one city needs a much smaller budget than a fintech app chasing "best personal loan app in India".

One-time SEO costs: audits, technical fixes, content and links

Not all SEO is a monthly retainer. These are the one-off costs worth budgeting for.

SEO audit cost in India

Nico Digital's July 2026 audit pricing guide sets out these bands by site size:

Audit level

Price

Site size

What you get

Free tool audit

₹0

Any

Automated crawl and health score

Entry

₹5,000 to ₹25,000

Under 100 pages

Tool export with light human commentary and a basic fix list

Standard

₹25,000 to ₹75,000

100 to 500 pages

Technical diagnosis, Search Console review, Core Web Vitals, prioritised fixes

Full scope

₹75,000 to ₹2,50,000

500 to 2,000 pages

Technical plus content, cannibalisation, backlinks, competitors and a roadmap

Enterprise

₹2.5 lakh to ₹10 lakh+

2,000+ pages or several markets

All of the above plus log files, hreflang and migration risk

The useful jump is from Entry to Standard, where a person starts checking the tool output instead of forwarding it. For a typical 20 to 50 page business website, an entry audit is often enough to start.

Technical SEO, content and backlinks

  • Technical SEO project: one-time projects start from about ₹15,000, according to Marko & Brando. Site migrations and redesigns cost more.

  • Content: SmartPixel estimates a well-researched 2,500-word article costs ₹4,000 to ₹15,000 to produce.

  • Earned backlinks: the same guide puts each outreach-earned link at ₹1,500 to ₹8,000 in senior time. That labour cost is why genuine link building is never cheap.

Do not forget GST

SEO and digital marketing services attract 18% GST in India, usually under SAC code 998361, and the rate did not change in the GST revision of 22 September 2025 (Busy). Always ask whether a quote is inclusive or exclusive of GST, because on a yearly retainer the difference is large. If your business is GST-registered, check with your accountant whether you can claim input tax credit on it.

A useful sanity check before you sign: estimate how many extra customers a year that spend has to bring in to pay for itself, using your average order value or client value. If the number looks unrealistic for your market, start with a smaller scope and a longer timeline rather than a cheaper provider.

How long SEO takes to show results

Every guide we checked says the same thing: SEO is slow, and cancelling at month three is the most common mistake.

  • 4 to 8 weeks: first ranking movement in local or low-competition markets (Nico Digital).

  • 3 to 4 months: initial movement for most sites (Marko & Brando).

  • 4 to 6 months: meaningful movement on competitive keywords (Nico Digital).

  • 6 to 9 months: significant return on investment (Marko & Brando).

  • 9 to 12 months: a realistic window to judge whether SEO is working (SmartPixel, Nico Digital).

So budget for a full year. If an agency promises page-one results in 30 days, read the next section.

Red flags: what you should never pay for

Google's own guide on hiring an SEO is blunt: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." It also warns against SEOs who claim a special relationship with Google, who are secretive about their methods, or who send unsolicited emails.

Watch for these in a proposal:

  • Guaranteed first-page or number-one rankings, especially with a deadline.

  • Cheap link packages, PBN (private blog network) links or "100 backlinks for ₹999" offers. Google's spam policies list "buying or selling links for ranking purposes" as link spam, and say sites that break the rules "may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all."

  • Hundreds of directory submissions, comment links or social bookmarks sold as link building.

  • "Unlimited blogs" with no word count, research standard or named writer.

  • No keyword research or difficulty analysis before the quote.

  • Reports from a private dashboard only, with no access to your own Google Search Console and Analytics.

  • Contracts where the agency owns your content, your Google Business Profile or your domain.

How to choose the right SEO budget

SmartPixel suggests sizing SEO spend to revenue:

Business size (annual revenue)

Suggested monthly SEO budget

Micro business, under ₹20 lakh

₹8,000 to ₹15,000

Small business, ₹20 lakh to ₹5 crore

₹25,000 to ₹50,000

Mid-market, ₹5 crore to ₹50 crore

₹60,000 to ₹1.5 lakh

Enterprise, above ₹50 crore

₹1.5 lakh+ or an in-house team

Checklist: questions to ask before you sign

  1. Can you show past work and results, ideally as Search Console charts? (one of Google's own suggested questions)

  2. Do you follow Google Search Essentials?

  3. What results do you expect, and by when?

  4. Which pages will you create or improve in month one?

  5. Who writes the content, and can I see a sample?

  6. How do you get backlinks, and roughly how many a month?

  7. Will you share every change you make to my site?

  8. Is the price inclusive of GST, and what is the minimum term?

  9. Do I keep full access to Search Console, Analytics and my Business Profile if we stop working together?

If your website itself is slow, hard to crawl or missing basic service pages, fix that first. SEO spend goes further on a site that is built to rank. Our older guides on getting your website on Google's first page and how domain authority affects SEO cover the basics.

Can you do SEO yourself?

Yes, for the basics. You can set up and maintain your Google Business Profile, connect Google Search Console, write clear titles and descriptions for each page and publish useful articles that answer your customers' questions. Paid help starts to make sense when you need technical fixes, a steady content programme or outreach, or when the hours you spend on SEO cost more than an agency would. A one-time audit plus a few months of DIY is a sensible middle path for a small business.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to get SEO in India?

Most Indian businesses pay ₹10,000 to ₹2,00,000 a month for legitimate SEO, with small businesses typically in the ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 range. One-time audits cost ₹5,000 to ₹75,000 for most small and mid-sized sites. Add 18% GST to agency quotes.

Is SEO still worth it in 2026?

For businesses whose customers search on Google before buying, usually yes, as long as you can commit for 9 to 12 months. Google now shows AI-generated overviews above results for many searches, including this one, so pages that answer questions clearly and are trusted enough to be cited have an advantage.

Is SEO free of cost?

Organic rankings are not bought from Google, so there is no fee per click. The cost is the work: content, technical fixes, links and the time to manage them. You can do the basics yourself for little more than your time.

Why is SEO so expensive?

Good SEO is skilled labour. A researched long article can cost ₹4,000 to ₹15,000 to produce and each earned backlink ₹1,500 to ₹8,000 in senior time, according to SmartPixel. Very cheap packages are cheap because they skip that work, often by using link tactics that Google's spam policies prohibit.

Can I do SEO on my own?

Yes. A business owner can handle the Google Business Profile, page titles, Search Console and regular helpful content. Technical SEO, large-scale content and outreach are where most people bring in help.

Is SEO being replaced by AI?

Not replaced, but it is changing. AI overviews and AI assistants now answer many questions directly, and they draw on web pages to do it. The basics still apply: a fast, crawlable site and clear, accurate content that answers real questions.
