Hotel Website Design: Features, Examples and Booking Tips

By Webhorse Studio Editorial Team

What a hotel website needs to win direct bookings: must-have features, booking engines in India, OTA commission maths, 8 examples and costs in rupees.

Cover image for Hotel Website Design: Features, Examples and Booking Tips

Good hotel website design does one job above all: it gets a guest from "this looks nice" to a confirmed booking on your own site, without sending them back to an OTA. That means a booking engine that sits inside your site, room pages that answer every question, fast pages on a phone, and a clear reason to book direct.

This guide covers the features every hotel website needs, how to pick a booking engine in India, what direct booking saves you against OTA commission, eight real hotel websites worth studying, and what a build costs in rupees. It is written for owners of independent hotels, resorts, boutique stays and homestays who want more direct bookings.

Why hotel website design matters more than it used to

Independent hotels rely heavily on online travel agencies. Cloudbeds' 2026 State of Independent Hotels report, based on 90 million bookings across 180 countries, found that OTAs handled 63.4% of independent hotel bookings in 2025. The same report found OTA bookings were cancelled 21.8% of the time, against 10.6% for direct bookings.

Each OTA booking also costs you commission. Rates are negotiated and rarely published, but a 2026 roundup of Indian OTA terms puts MakeMyTrip and Goibibo at roughly 15% to 40%, Booking.com at 10% to 25%, and Agoda at 15% to 20%, depending on the property and programme. On a ₹3,000 room night, 15% to 25% is ₹450 to ₹750 that a direct booking would have kept.

Indian hotels also have more freedom to price direct than they used to. In October 2022 the Competition Commission of India fined MakeMyTrip-Goibibo ₹223.48 crore and directed it to remove price and room parity obligations that stopped hotels offering better rates elsewhere, including on their own websites. Check your own OTA contracts, but a website that can sell a member rate or a direct-booking perk now earns its keep as a sales channel.

Finally, your guests are on phones. StatCounter's figures for September 2026 show 77.3% of web traffic in India came from mobile, 22.1% from desktop and 0.6% from tablets. A hotel site that is designed on a large monitor and checked on a phone at the end will lose bookings.

Must-have features of a hotel website

These are the features that move a visitor towards booking. If your current site is missing several, start there before any visual redesign.

The booking widget

Keep it short. The Leela's homepage widget, for example, asks for the hotel, check-in and check-out dates, rooms and guests, and an optional promo code, with a "Best Rate Guarantee" link beside it. That is close to the right amount: anything more belongs on the next step.

On mobile, the widget often gets pushed below a large hero image. Fix this with a sticky "Check availability" bar at the bottom of the screen that opens the date picker.

Room pages that sell

Room pages are where most hotel sites are weakest. A single "Rooms" page with three thumbnails and a paragraph is not enough for someone spending ₹8,000 a night. Give each room type its own page with honest photos (including the bathroom), the room size in square feet, the bed type, the view, and what is and is not included. Put the rate and a "Book this room" button at the top, not after the amenities list.

Photos and video

Use your own professional photos, shot in daylight, with people only where they help (a couple at breakfast, a family by the pool). Stock images are spotted quickly and damage trust. Short, muted background video can work on the homepage, but compress it hard and serve a still image to slow connections.

Booking engine options for Indian hotels

A booking engine is the software that shows availability, takes the reservation and collects payment on your website. For most independent hotels it should connect to a channel manager, so a room sold on your site is removed from MakeMyTrip, Booking.com and Agoda straight away and you never double-book.

Indian options include Djubo, eZee Centrix, RezNext and AxisRooms. One India-focused hotel software directory says most of these start from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a year, while AxisRooms puts the annual cost of most booking engine platforms for a small hotel at ₹15,000 to ₹60,000. Global platforms such as Cloudbeds and SiteMinder are also used by Indian properties, usually as part of a wider bundle. Prices depend on room count and modules, so get written quotes.

What to check before you choose

  • Channel manager connection: does it sync live with the OTAs you use, and with your PMS if you have one?
  • Payments: UPI, cards and netbanking through an Indian gateway such as Razorpay or PayU, plus part-payment or pay-at-hotel options.
  • GST: correct tax on the guest invoice and confirmation, using the right slab for the room rate (see the GST section below).
  • Design control: can the booking pages use your fonts, colours and logo, and stay on your domain or a subdomain like book.yourhotel.com?
  • Mobile checkout: test the full booking on a mid-range Android phone on 4G before signing.
  • Rate tools: promo codes, member rates, length-of-stay discounts and packages.
  • Google free booking links: can the engine send your rates to Google? Google's free booking links show your official site with its rate in hotel search results, and Google charges hotel partners no fee for them. Many reservation systems connect to Google for you.
  • Contract terms: flat annual fee or commission per booking, lock-in period, and whether you can export your guest data if you leave.

Embedded engine vs redirect

Some engines open a separate, plain-looking page on another domain when the guest clicks "Book now". That jump costs trust: the design changes, the URL changes and the guest wonders if they are still on your hotel's site. Prefer an engine that embeds in your pages or can be styled to match them closely, and make sure analytics tracks the booking across both.

Direct booking vs OTA: the maths

OTAs are still useful for reach, especially for new properties. A good hotel website shifts some of that share back to direct, where you keep the margin and the guest relationship.

OTA bookingDirect booking on your website
CommissionOften 15% to 25%, higher for some independentsNone; you pay a booking engine fee and a payment gateway fee
GST on commission18% on the commission invoice; a real cost if you cannot claim input tax creditNot applicable
Guest dataOften masked; limited ability to remarketYou hold the email and phone (with consent) for repeat stays
Cancellation rate21.8% (Cloudbeds 2026 report)10.6% (same report)
UpsellsLimited to what the OTA supportsBreakfast, airport pickup, spa, late checkout at booking
Pricing controlSubject to OTA programmes and discountsMember rates and packages you design

Worked example (illustrative)

Take a 20-room hotel at 60% occupancy with an average rate of ₹3,000. That is 360 room nights and ₹10.8 lakh of room revenue a month. If 60% of those nights come through OTAs at an average 18% commission, the hotel pays ₹1,16,640 a month in commission. Add 18% GST on the commission and it becomes about ₹1,37,635, if that GST cannot be claimed back.

Now suppose a better website moves 10% of room nights (36 nights, ₹1,08,000) from OTAs to direct. The hotel saves about ₹22,939 a month in commission and GST. Take off an assumed 2% payment gateway fee (₹2,160) and the net saving is roughly ₹20,800 a month, or about ₹2.5 lakh a year, before the booking engine's annual fee.

These figures are an example, not a forecast. Plug in your own room count, rate, OTA mix and commission from your OTA invoices.

Pages every hotel website needs

  1. Home: one strong photo or short video, a one-line promise ("Lake-view rooms 10 minutes from Udaipur airport"), the booking widget, top three reasons to stay, reviews and a short room preview.
  2. Rooms and suites: an overview page plus one page per room type.
  3. Offers and packages: dated offers with clear terms. Remove expired ones.
  4. Dining: restaurants and bars with timings, menus and a table request form.
  5. Experiences or things to do: spa, activities and local sights, with timings, prices and how to book them.
  6. Weddings, meetings and events: venue capacities, layouts and an enquiry form that reaches sales quickly.
  7. Gallery: organised by room, dining, property and surroundings.
  8. Location and contact: map, directions, phone, WhatsApp, email and reception hours.
  9. About: the story of the property and the people who run it.
  10. Policies and privacy: booking terms, cancellation and a privacy notice.
  11. Blog or local guide (optional): useful for search if you will keep it updated, for example "Things to do in Coorg in monsoon".

Speed, mobile and SEO for hotel websites

Hotel websites are photo-heavy, which makes them slow if nobody manages it. Google's Core Web Vitals give clear targets: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of visits on mobile and desktop separately.

  • Images: serve WebP or AVIF, size them for the screen, and lazy-load everything below the first screen.
  • Hero: one image or a short compressed loop, not a slider with eight full-screen photos.
  • Booking widget: reserve its space in the layout so the page does not jump when it loads.
  • Third-party scripts: chat widgets, review badges and tracking tags add up. Keep only what you use.
  • Local SEO: a complete Google Business Profile, the same name, address and phone on your site and every listing, and Hotel schema markup on your pages.
  • Content: unique text for each room and offer page, and location pages that answer what guests search for, such as "hotel near Mumbai airport with pool".

Our technical SEO checklist covers indexing, sitemaps and Core Web Vitals in more detail.

GST, payments and guest data: the India rules

GST on room tariffs

From 22 September 2025, GST on hotel accommodation priced at ₹7,500 or less per night is 5% without input tax credit, and rooms above ₹7,500 attract 18% with input tax credit. The slab now depends on the actual price charged, not a declared tariff, as explained in this summary of the 2025 hotel GST changes. Your booking engine must apply the right rate per room night, including when a seasonal rate crosses ₹7,500. Confirm the treatment for your property with your CA.

Payments

Offer UPI at checkout alongside cards and netbanking. Give guests a choice of pay now, part-pay or pay at hotel if your cancellation policy supports it, and show the full price including taxes before the payment step.

Guest data and the DPDP Act

Your website collects names, phone numbers, emails and sometimes ID details. The government notified the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules on 14 November 2025, with an 18-month phased compliance period. In practice your booking and enquiry forms should carry a clear consent notice, marketing opt-ins should be separate and unticked, and you should only collect what you need. Our website security checklist covers the technical side.

8 hotel website examples worth studying

These are live sites we reviewed in October 2026. Each one does at least one thing well that an independent hotel can copy at a smaller budget.

WebsiteTypeWhat to learn from it
The LeelaLuxury chainCompact booking widget with promo code and a Best Rate Guarantee link beside it; floating "Connect" button for enquiry, call and live chat
Lemon Tree HotelsMid-market chainShows member rate next to standard rate on room listings and has a "Why Book Directly" section
ITC HotelsLuxury chainBooking box with tabs for rooms, restaurant and event requests, plus a best-rate promise
Taj HotelsLuxury chainClear top navigation (Destinations, Hotels, Experiences, Offers, Memberships) and reservation numbers in plain view
Neemrana HotelsHeritage collectionProperty cards that lead with the century and location, which sells the story in one line
The HostellerHostel chain"Starting @ ₹" prices on every property card and length-of-stay offers on the homepage
ZostelHostel and homestay brandSimple search-led homepage and a short FAQ that answers "where do I book?" directly
AmanGlobal luxury resort brandVery little text, large captioned photography and a single "Reserve" link

What the examples have in common

  • A booking action sits in the homepage header.
  • Each gives a reason to book direct, whether a member rate, a best-rate promise or perks.
  • Photos are large and consistent in style.
  • Contact details are easy to find, and the larger brands warn guests to use only official channels, which matters given fake booking sites.

Most of these sites show no WhatsApp button, and an independent hotel can add one at little cost. Our guide to WhatsApp Business API pricing in India explains what automated replies and booking confirmations on WhatsApp cost.

How much does a hotel website cost in India?

Prices vary widely, because a five-page site with an enquiry form and a multi-property platform with its own booking logic are very different jobs. Here are market ranges from published Indian price lists, checked in October 2026.

Type of buildTypical published priceBest for
Template site from a budget providerFrom about ₹7,800 to ₹14,300, plus ₹3,500 a year renewal (Webolive packages)Homestays and small guesthouses that mostly take enquiries
Custom-designed site with a third-party booking engineGet quotes; see our website development cost guide for business site rangesIndependent hotels and resorts that want direct bookings
Custom booking platform built from scratch₹2.5 lakh to ₹10 lakh for entry level, ₹10 lakh to ₹35 lakh for mid-tier (Q9 Infotech, Nov 2025)Hotel groups and booking businesses with their own inventory logic
Booking engine subscriptionFrom ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a year for basic plans; ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 a year for most small-hotel platformsAny hotel taking online bookings

Budget separately for professional photography, copywriting, hosting, the domain, an SSL certificate and ongoing updates. Most single properties do not need a custom booking platform; a well-designed site plus a good third-party engine is usually the better value. Our website maintenance cost guide covers the yearly running costs.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hotel website?

A hotel website is a property's own site where guests can see rooms, rates, photos, location and policies, and book directly. Unlike an OTA listing, you control the content, the price and the guest relationship, and you pay no commission on bookings made through it.

How do I create a hotel website?

Decide your main goal (direct bookings or enquiries), choose a booking engine that connects to your channel manager, plan the pages listed above, arrange professional photos, then build on a CMS or custom stack with the booking engine embedded. Test the full booking on a phone, connect Google free booking links, and track completed bookings in analytics.

What is the best website builder for hotels?

It depends on your size and goals. DIY builders such as Wix or WordPress themes suit small homestays on a tight budget. Hotel-specific platforms bundle a website with a booking engine. A custom design with a third-party booking engine gives the most control over speed, brand and SEO. Our Wix vs WordPress comparison covers the DIY options.

Which features matter most on a hotel website?

A booking engine on your own domain, a booking button on every page, detailed room pages with real photos, a clear reason to book direct, fast loading on mobile, and easy contact through call and WhatsApp. Missing any of these usually costs bookings.

Can I offer lower rates on my website than on OTAs?

In 2022 the CCI directed MakeMyTrip-Goibibo to remove price and room parity obligations from hotel contracts. Your own OTA agreements still set the terms, so read them. Many hotels use member-only rates, packages or perks such as free breakfast to make direct booking better value.

How much does a hotel booking engine cost in India?

Published figures put basic Indian booking engines from about ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a year, and most small-hotel platforms at ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 a year, depending on room count and modules. Ask for the full annual cost, including channel manager and payment fees.
