Wix vs WordPress comes down to one trade-off: Wix is easier, WordPress is yours. Wix gives you hosting, security and a drag-and-drop editor in one subscription, so a small business can launch in a weekend. WordPress (the free, self-hosted version from WordPress.org) takes more setup, but you can move it to any host, extend it with tens of thousands of plugins and hand it to any developer in India.
If you need a simple brochure site you will update yourself and never want to think about hosting, Wix is a sensible choice. If the website is a long-term business asset, especially one built around blogging, SEO or a growing catalogue, WordPress usually wins. And for some businesses, neither is right; we cover when a custom-built site makes more sense near the end.
Below we compare the two on rupee cost over three years, ease of use, SEO, speed, ownership, ecommerce for Indian payments, and maintenance. All prices were checked on 25 October 2026.
Wix vs WordPress at a glance
| Factor | Wix | WordPress (self-hosted) |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Hosted website builder (SaaS) | Open-source software you install on any host |
| Who handles hosting, security, updates | Wix | You, your host or your developer |
| Ease of use | Easier: drag-and-drop editor, no setup | Steeper: hosting, theme and plugins to choose |

| Add-ons | Wix App Market (curated) | Over 76,000 free plugins on WordPress.org |
| Can you move the site to another host? | No. The site must run on Wix's servers | Yes. Files and database move to any host |
| Typical yearly software cost (India) | Annual plan from a few thousand rupees, plus GST | Hosting from under ₹1,000 a year on long intro terms, plus GST |
| Indian payments | Razorpay supported as a payment provider | Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and others via WooCommerce plugins |
| Best for | Simple sites, portfolios, local service businesses | Content-heavy sites, SEO-led growth, sites that will grow |
What is the difference between Wix and WordPress?
The biggest difference is the operating model: who runs the site and who is responsible when something breaks.
Wix is software you rent. You pay Wix every year, and in return Wix runs the servers, applies security patches, keeps backups and gives you an editor in the browser. Wix states plainly in its own help centre that "in order for your site to work properly, it needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers" (Wix Help Center).
WordPress is software you own a copy of. It is free and open source, and you install it on hosting you choose: Hostinger, a local Indian host, a cloud server or a managed WordPress provider. You (or whoever you hire) pick the theme, plugins and backups.
That model explains most of the other differences in this comparison. Wix is simpler because it makes the decisions for you. WordPress is more flexible because it lets you make them.
WordPress.org vs WordPress.com
One point of confusion: WordPress.com is a hosted service run by Automattic, closer in spirit to Wix. Its paid plans are priced in US dollars, and on 25 October 2026 its pricing page listed plugin installation from the Personal plan upward. This article compares Wix with self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org), which is what most Indian agencies and freelancers mean when they say "a WordPress site".
How popular are they?
WordPress is by far the most used website platform. According to W3Techs (data dated 24 October 2026), WordPress runs 39.6% of all websites and holds 58.3% of the market for sites that use a known content management system. Wix runs 4.2% of all websites, a 6.2% share.
Popularity matters for a practical reason in India: almost every web developer, freelancer and agency can work on WordPress. If your developer leaves, finding another one is easy. Wix skills are common too, but you are limited to what the Wix editor and its Velo coding layer allow.
Wix vs WordPress cost in India over 3 years
Comparing first-year prices is misleading, because both sides use introductory offers. A fairer test is what you will pay over three years for the same simple business site.
What Wix costs in India
Wix prices vary by country. Its plans page notes that "prices and currency vary by location" and shows yearly subscriptions paid in full upfront, with a free domain voucher for the first year on most annual plans. The most recent rupee list prices we could find published (by payments company Nimbbl, accurate as of February 2025) were:
| Wix plan | Per month (billed yearly) | Per year | Accepts online payments? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | ₹199 | ₹2,388 | No |
| Core | ₹399 | ₹4,788 | Yes (basic ecommerce) |
| Business | ₹799 | ₹9,588 | Yes (standard ecommerce) |
| Business Elite | ₹1,599 | ₹19,188 | Yes (advanced ecommerce) |
Those figures exclude GST. Wix may have changed its India pricing since, so open the plans page from India before you budget; it will show the current rupee price for your location. There is also a free plan, but it shows Wix branding and does not let you connect your own domain, so it is not suitable for a business.
What WordPress costs in India
The WordPress software is free. You pay for hosting, a domain, and optionally a premium theme or plugins. As one example, Hostinger India's WordPress hosting on 25 October 2026 listed:
| Hostinger plan | Intro price (48-month term) | Renewal price |
|---|---|---|
| Single | ₹69/month | ₹289/month |
| Premium | ₹139/month | ₹449/month |
| Unlimited | ₹199/month | ₹649/month |
| Cloud Startup | ₹599/month | ₹1,599/month |
These prices exclude GST and require paying the full term upfront. Notice the jump at renewal: renewal rates are roughly three to four times the intro rate on most plans. That pattern is common across Indian hosting.
Three-year comparison for a small business site
Here is a like-for-like estimate for a 5 to 10 page business site with an enquiry form, using the prices above. GST at 18% (the rate Indian hosts such as Domain India charge on hosting) is added on top.
| Cost item (3 years) | Wix Light | WordPress on Hostinger Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Platform or hosting | ₹2,388 × 3 = ₹7,164 | ₹139 × 48 months = ₹6,672 (covers 4 years) |
| Domain | Free voucher for year 1, then renewals in years 2 and 3 | Often bundled for year 1 by hosts, then renewals |
| Theme | Included templates | Free theme, or a one-time premium theme |
| Updates, backups, security | Included | Your time, or a maintenance plan |
| Software subtotal before GST | About ₹7,200 | About ₹6,700 |
| Subtotal with 18% GST | About ₹8,450 | About ₹7,870 |
On software alone, the two are close for a basic site. The real difference is labour. With Wix, upkeep is included. With WordPress, someone has to update plugins, check backups and fix the occasional conflict. If you pay a developer for that, it usually costs more than the hosting itself; our guide to website maintenance cost in India breaks down typical monthly and annual plans.
The picture flips as the site grows. If you need online payments, Wix pushes you to Core or above, and the yearly fee doubles or quadruples. WordPress with WooCommerce stays on similar hosting until traffic grows, and you pay only for the plugins you need.
Ease of use: Wix wins
For a first-time owner, Wix is easier. You pick a template (or let its AI builder create a draft), drag sections around, and publish. There is nothing to install or configure.
WordPress has a learning curve. You need to choose a host, install WordPress (most Indian hosts do this in one click), pick a theme, and learn the block editor or a page builder such as Elementor. After the setup, day-to-day editing is not hard, but the first week can be confusing.
A practical test: think about who will update the site after launch. If it is you, with no technical help, Wix will feel more comfortable. If you have a developer or agency on call, WordPress's extra complexity is not your problem.
Design and flexibility: WordPress wins long term
Wix gives you pixel-level control inside its editor, which many owners like. The catch is that you cannot switch to a different Wix template later without rebuilding your pages.
WordPress separates content from design. You can change the theme and keep your pages and posts. Developers can also edit the code directly, build custom post types (for example, property listings or doctor profiles) and connect almost any third-party tool through plugins or the REST API.
If your site needs features beyond what the Wix App Market offers, such as a custom quote calculator, a property search with filters, or a link to your billing software, WordPress is usually the easier path.
Wix vs WordPress for SEO
Neither platform guarantees rankings. Google ranks individual pages on their content, speed, structure and links, and both platforms can produce pages that rank well.
Where they differ is how much control you get:
- Wix has built-in SEO settings: page titles, meta descriptions, custom URLs, redirects, an editable robots.txt, automatic sitemaps and structured data fields. For most small sites, this is enough, and beginners are less likely to break something.
- WordPress relies on plugins such as Yoast SEO or Rank Math, which give finer control over schema, canonical tags, breadcrumbs and internal linking. Developers can change anything in the theme's HTML.
- Blogging: WordPress started as a blogging tool and is still stronger for large content sites, with categories, tags, custom fields, editorial workflow and author roles. If your plan relies on publishing regularly to win search traffic, this matters.
Our on-page SEO checklist works the same on both platforms; run it whichever you pick.
Speed and performance
Wix controls its own hosting, so its sites tend to perform consistently. WordPress speed depends entirely on how the site is built: a lightweight theme on good hosting can be very fast, while a heavy page builder with 30 plugins on cheap shared hosting can be slow.
Field data reflects this. The October 2026 State of Web Vitals report, based on real Chrome users on phones, showed Wix sites passing the Largest Contentful Paint check far more often than WordPress sites as a group (about 94% versus about 70%). That gap is an average across hundreds of thousands of sites, many of them poorly maintained WordPress installs. A well-built WordPress site can match or beat Wix, but you have to build it that way.
If you go with WordPress, choose a lightweight theme, keep plugins to what you actually use, use caching, compress images to WebP, and pick a host with servers in or near India.
Ownership and moving your site later
Many comparisons skip this point, but it decides how easily you can change hosts or agencies later.
With Wix, you own your content and your domain, but not a portable website. Wix's help centre says the site must be hosted on its servers, and embedding it elsewhere means search engines and analytics "may not work properly" (source). If you leave Wix, you can take your domain and copy your text and images, but the design and features have to be rebuilt on the new platform.
With WordPress, you can download the full site (files plus database) and move it to another host in a few hours. That is useful if your host raises renewal prices, has frequent downtime, or if you change agencies.
One caution: open-source software does not automatically mean you own everything. Make sure the domain, hosting account and any premium licences are registered in your company's name and email, not your developer's. It is common for a business to lose access to its own site because a former developer holds the logins.
Ecommerce and Indian payments
Both platforms can run an online store in India, with different trade-offs.
- Wix: Razorpay is listed as a supported payment provider for Indian sites, with INR-only transactions and a Wix premium plan that supports payments (Wix Help Center). Inventory, orders and shipping rules live inside Wix. This works well for small catalogues.
- WordPress + WooCommerce: free core plugin, with official or third-party plugins for Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, Shiprocket, GST invoices and COD rules. It takes more setup, but it is far more flexible and has no platform subscription tied to store size.
If ecommerce is the main purpose of the site, also look at Shopify. We compared the options in detail in Shopify vs WooCommerce for Indian businesses.
Security and maintenance
Wix handles server security, SSL, platform updates and backups. You still need a strong password and two-factor authentication on your account, but the attack surface is small.
WordPress is secure when maintained, but because it is so popular, outdated plugins and themes are a common target. A WordPress site needs regular updates, off-site backups, a security plugin or firewall, and someone to check it every month. Our website security checklist lists 20 checks for business sites.
WordPress vs a custom website: when neither Wix nor WordPress fits
Some businesses outgrow both. A custom-built site (for example, a Next.js or Laravel front end, sometimes with WordPress or a headless CMS behind it for content) makes sense when:
- The site is really an application: customer logins, dashboards, bookings with complex rules, or pricing calculators.
- It must connect tightly to your ERP, CRM, billing or inventory system.
- Speed is critical and you want full control over every line of code.
- You are spending more time fighting plugins or editor limits than adding content.
The trade-off is cost and dependency on a developer. A custom build costs more upfront than a template site, and every change goes through someone who knows the code. For typical rupee ranges by site type, see our guide to website development cost in India.
Verdict: which should you choose?
| Your situation | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small local business, 5 to 10 pages, you will edit it yourself | Wix | Fast to launch, nothing to maintain |
| Portfolio for a designer, photographer or architect | Wix | Visual editor and templates suit image-led sites |
| Business that wants to grow through blogging and SEO | WordPress | Stronger content tools and SEO control |
| Online store with Indian payments, shipping and GST invoices | WordPress + WooCommerce (or Shopify) | Wider choice of Indian integrations |
| Site you may hand to a new agency later | WordPress | Portable to any host, any developer |
| Real estate, clinic or education site with listings and filters | WordPress or custom | Custom post types and integrations |
| Customer portal, booking engine or deep ERP link | Custom build | Beyond what either builder handles well |
A 10-point checklist before you decide
- Write down the five tasks the site must do (enquiries, payments, bookings, blog, catalogue).
- Decide who will update the site every week.
- Check the current rupee price for the Wix plan you need, from India, including GST.
- Check the renewal price, not just the intro price, for any WordPress host.
- Confirm your payment gateway (Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree) works with the platform.
- Estimate three years of cost, including maintenance time or a maintenance plan.
- Register the domain in your company's name, with a company email.
- Ask how you would move the site in three years if you needed to.
- Check the platform can handle your forms, WhatsApp button and analytics without hacks.
- Test the editor yourself for 30 minutes before committing.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for a blog, Wix or WordPress?
WordPress. It was built for publishing and has stronger tools for categories, tags, authors, scheduling and SEO. Wix's blog is fine for occasional posts, but serious content sites usually choose WordPress.
What is cheaper, WordPress or Wix?
For a basic site, the software cost over three years is similar. WordPress gets cheaper as you add features like ecommerce, because you do not need a higher Wix plan. Wix gets cheaper if you would otherwise pay someone to maintain WordPress.
Why are people leaving Wix?
The common reasons are wanting more control over SEO and code, needing integrations the Wix App Market lacks, rising plan costs as the business grows, and wanting a site they can move between hosts. Moving off Wix means rebuilding the design on the new platform.
Is Wix the best website maker?
It is one of the easiest. For a simple business site you will manage yourself, it is a strong choice. It is not the best fit for content-heavy sites, complex stores or anything you may need to move later.
Can I switch from Wix to WordPress later?
Yes, but expect to rebuild the site rather than transfer it. Your domain, text and images can move; the design, forms and apps need to be recreated in WordPress. Plan for redirects so you do not lose search rankings.
Is WordPress good for SEO in 2026?
Yes, when it is set up properly with a fast theme, good hosting and an SEO plugin. Wix is also capable for small sites. Content and site quality matter more than the platform.
